  • Conservation Agriculture (CA), is about a way of farming that practices very limited tillage in order to conserve organic matter. CA is a way of farming that aims to farm with, and preserve natural processes as much as possible. It limits the use of external technology, labour and chemicals and makes farms increasingly profitable and ecologically sustainable in the long-term.
  • This course focuses on cross-cutting principles and attributes of biosecurity; on a scoping description of the various domains of biosecurity and presents an overview of cross-cutting procedures that apply to biosecurity holistically defined.

This course is designed to serve as a foundation for the various specialist sub-domains of biosecurity where the general topics introduced here; e.g. Risk Assessment (RA), are dealt with in context of the relative sub-domain, such as Pest Risk Assessment (PRA) in the sub-domain of Phytosanitary Plant Protection.
  • A description of the different regimes of authority over global biosecurity vested in various International Standards Setting Bodies (ISSBs) such as the Codex Alimentarius for Food Safety and the Commission on Phytosanitary Matters (CPM) that governs the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC).

The history, mandates and current status of the ISSBs are presented and analyzed in terms of differences and similarities and how they act in concert to impact biosecurity holistically defined.
